Use Ethereum USDT when the recipient accepts Ethereum USDT; use Tron USDT when it accepts Tron USDT. If it accepts both, compare your actual total quote and the recipient’s ability to use the funds. Neither network is universally cheaper.
The same issuer, two separate networks
Tether lists USD₮ deployments on Ethereum and Tron in its supported protocols. ERC-20 and TRC-20 describe token standards; a transfer on one network does not deliver a balance on the other. Read the chain name too: ERC-20-style tokens exist on other compatible chains, so the standard alone is not a complete network identifier.

Wallet costs and exchange fees answer different questions
A normal Ethereum token transfer uses ETH to pay for execution. Holding USDT does not automatically supply that ETH. The Ethereum gas documentation explains the network fee; sponsored wallet arrangements can change what an individual user pays.
Tron meters transaction data through Bandwidth and smart-contract execution through Energy. Available resources and the transaction affect the cost; insufficient resources can cause TRX to be burned. The TRON resource model is more useful than a claim that every TRC-20 transfer has one fixed fee.
An exchange may quote a withdrawal charge in USDT instead. Compare that quote for an exchange withdrawal. Do not replace it with a gas estimate for a different wallet, or add another network fee unless the confirmation actually charges one separately.
Choose from options the recipient can use
If only one network is supported at the destination, the choice is constrained. If both are supported, compare the delivered amount, processing conditions and any further transfer the recipient must make. A wallet holding Tron USDT may still need resources or TRX before sending onward.
Suppose a recipient needs 300 USDT credited and the sender’s quote deducts 1.5 USDT. Sending 300 delivers 298.5. A requested 301.5 would deliver 300 under that particular deduction rule. If the fee is charged separately, the arithmetic changes. Check the confirmation instead of assuming what a platform means by “amount.”
This is a hypothetical calculation. Account resources, network conditions and platform pricing prevent a defensible permanent price ranking.
Changing networks requires a supported process
If your USDT is in a self-custody wallet on Ethereum, selecting Tron in a different wallet view does not move it. Use only a service flow that explicitly supports your starting asset and desired receiving network. Review the complete quote and service terms.
Tether’s FAQ tells senders to verify the transport protocol. An exchange listing “USDT” is insufficient: inspect its current deposit instructions for your account.
