Does Polygon use POL or MATIC for gas?

Identify Polygon PoS before checking the ticker

Polygon’s network reference lists mainnet chain ID 137 and POL as its gas token. Compare that with the network in your wallet. A token name by itself does not identify a network, and a familiar 0x address can appear on several chains.

For an ordinary USDC send on Polygon PoS, the spendable native balance is therefore POL on Polygon PoS. POL represented as a token on another chain does not automatically fund that send. When obtaining gas, check both the asset and withdrawal network rather than selecting the first matching ticker.

Why a wallet can still display MATIC

Polygon announced the native-token transition for September 4, 2024. Its migration guidance says holders of native MATIC on Polygon PoS did not need to perform a manual swap. Wallet network settings could retain the old symbol after the change.

An old display label is not, by itself, evidence that your funds are stuck or that a migration website must be used. Compare the native balance in the wallet with the network’s explorer and review the wallet’s network metadata. Changing a label changes how a balance is displayed; it does not transfer funds, alter the chain or create a new balance.

Use the official migration explanation to understand the historical change, rather than acting on an unsolicited migration message.

MATIC on Ethereum follows a different process

The automatic Polygon PoS change should not be generalized to every asset with MATIC in its name. Polygon provides separate instructions for MATIC held on Ethereum, including its migration mechanism. Exchange-held balances also depend on the provider’s handling and supported deposits and withdrawals.

Before doing anything, record where the asset is held, whether it is native or a token, and the network on which you need to use it. A historical MATIC balance on Ethereum and a native gas balance on Polygon PoS are different starting points. Consult the current official migration guide for the former; this page does not instruct you to execute a migration.

If a Polygon transaction still reports insufficient gas

Check whether the displayed amount is native POL, a wrapped token, or a balance on another chain. For example, a wallet could hold USDC on Polygon and a token called POL on Ethereum while having no native Polygon balance. The total dollar value would not solve the Polygon fee requirement.

Then review the wallet’s current fee estimate and any eligible sponsored or token-paid flow. Some wallets can arrange payment with another asset, but eligibility belongs to that wallet and transaction. There is no single fixed POL amount that guarantees every transfer, swap or bridge will execute.

Do not send funds to a “migration agent” or reveal a recovery phrase to repair a ticker display. Official documentation, network settings and a public explorer are enough to identify this particular mismatch.
